geog assignment- Iran 2003 Bam earthquake

Bam's major earthquake struck Bam and the surrounding Kerman province of southeastern Iran at 1:56 AM UTC (5:26 AM Iran Standard Time) on Friday, December 26, 2003. The Bam earthquake occurred as stresses generated by the motion of the Arabian plate northward against the Eurasian plate. The estimate for the magnitude of the earthquake is a moment magnitude (Mw) of 6.6. The death toll was around 26'000 and injuring another 30'000 people. Many of the area's structures used mud bricks that did not comply with earthquake regulations set in 1989. Many of the houses in Bam were homemade and its owners did not use skilled labor or stable and proper building materials to construct their houses. Thus as a result many of the buildings came crashing down. It was also said that most of the people were crushed while they were sleeping. 85-90% of the buildings and infrastructure in the Bam area were either damaged or destroyed, with at least 75% of the houses there being completely destroyed. The massive earthquake left an estimated of 100,000 people homeless. Not a single house was standing in Baravat. The U.S. offered direct humanitarian assistance to Iran, however,Iran initially declined this offer, although later they accepted it. The Iranian President Mohammad Khatami called the rupture a "national tragedy" and urged all Iranians to help its victims. The spiritual leader Ali Khamenei visited the damage on 29 December 2003, urging all Iranians and international organizations to come and provide assistance. The buildings should have been constructed using durable materials. Scientist could have detected the earthquake and the government could have evacuated the people away before the earthquake struck.
